THE COUNTRY TEACHER
Monday, June 29
8:00pm
With its beautiful cinematography, quiet but captivating performances, and the gorgeous vista of the Czech countryside, The Country Teacher affirms itself as one of eastern Europe’s greatest LGBT offerings in some time. Petr is a young teacher with a lot of promise and family connections that have gained him a job offer in one of Prague’s most respected schools.
Instead of taking his chance to work in the capital city’s top school he opts for a position teaching sciences in a simple rural grammar school. Longing to escape the familiarity of his life, and a bitter break-up with an ex-boyfriend, he seeks the peace and quiet that the countryside can offer him, and the time to ponder his struggling sexuality. Yet his new surroundings don’t give him the total anonymity he was looking for, particularly when his former lover arrives and realizes that local widow, Marie, while busy tending to her farm and raising a rambunctious teenager, has fallen for Petr, whose affection lays with her 17-year old son In this backwater town where homophobia is a way of life and alcoholism a past-time, where is Petr’s place?
Ultimately, The Country Teacher is a film about many things: self-acceptance, desire, forgiveness but at its core it is about our intricate need to love each other and most importantly, ourselves.
