Eyes Wide Open

Post-screening Audience Discussion

Because of the strong themes explored so powerfully in EYES WIDE OPEN, we've assembled a panel of respondents to discuss the film's core issues.

Rabbi Scott White of Congregation Ohev Sholom, therapist Elaine Meizlish, and health educator Lee Fenwick will share their comments and insights immediately following next Wednesday night's screening at the Tivoli.

You're invited to stay and participate in the discussion as your schedule allows.

Remember, this will be the only public screening of this taboo-breaking, new drama from Israel.

Yes, it's a foreign film. With subtitles.  But if you like films that move you and make you think, then join us.

You can read this insightful preview from the Huffington Post.  And, watch the official trailer.

A List of Cinematic Lust
What's your take on this ranking of nine famous on-screen hookups

One of the more interesting responses I got to our email announcing the opening of THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT in Kansas City was a link to a story on Salon.com

Seems that one of their writers found an intimate, yet funny moment in the film between Annette Benning and Julianne Moore to be a cinematic turning point. Stating it's "refreshing to see lesbian sexuality portrayed with a respect and humor rarely exhibited in mainstream movies."

To trace how Hollywood finally "got there", he created this list of the 9 most pivotal gay & lesbian sex scenes from Tinsel Town's not-so-straightforward past.

Although he makes some compelling choices, some of what he writes may make your groan.

And while the treatment of LGBT people in movies has changed tremendously over the past few decades, it still has much room for improvement.

So, what would be on your list?

Maybe you've got an idea for an entirely different list of memorable film scenes that should be compiled.

Feel free to email me your comments.

Thanks for coming out to the movies,

Jamie Rich
Festival Director

Set in an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Jerusalem, the film gives nearly equal weight to both sides in that struggle. Its scrupulous, humane sympathy gives this small, sorrowful film a glow of insight and a pulse of genuine, openhearted curiosity.

It moves slowly and patiently through the ordeal of a single soul, illuminating in the process a cosmos of intense and hidden feeling.

“Impressively directed, thought-provoking and emotionally engaging drama that plays like an orthodox Jewish version of Brokeback Mountain

“Religious people do not consider homosexuality a sin; it just does not exist. I really want to help break the silence, to be part of the evolution of the orthodox world. There is a way to convince people, through movies, without using force, to say: “Look, this exists.” I think our heroes are diving into this romance whereas they know there is no real chance to live it. It’s just like accepting faith. I see EYES WIDE OPEN as a car rushing towards you, but you keep on walking in the same direction. ”
